Do’s and Don’ts of Fall Skin Care

Our skin needs a check-up once in a while too. The changing of seasons sometimes comes slowly and then all at once. Suddenly, the skin may start appearing more oily or dull than before; what has changed? Sometimes a change in your schedule, the temperature, or a simple expiration date on a product can be the culprit.

Let’s dive into a comprehensive list of “dos” and “don’ts” to consider.

Do…

(Do) Take inventory of your products. Toss old products, and write down items you may need to re-order. The basics should include a daily cleanser, a pre-moisturizer toner, sunscreen for the daytime, a moisturizer for the nighttime, and an eye cream. Other essentials: an exfoliating product and a targeted serum.

(Do) Clean any skin care tools and brushes you use regularly. A dirty brush or tool can contribute to introducing old products, bacteria, or other pollutants to the skin’s surface. Also, a clean brush will apply the product more efficiently and help contribute to the look of smooth, even skin tone.

(Do) Toss old makeup products. Old beauty products can contribute to skin care issues like dryness or the look of uneven skin tone. A typical expiration date is around 1 year of use.

(Do) Check up on your skincare routine. Are you cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and using a serum? If one of these steps has “fallen off” recently, make sure you reestablish this critical, basic daily routine (AM & PM!)

Consistency is key. “Cleanse, tone, moisturize, protect.”

(Do) Exfoliate. In the fall, the change in temperature can cause the skin to become more easily dry and irritated. Removing dead skin cells through exfoliation multiple times per week will help with this greatly.

Read our blog on exfoliating masks and other targeted products for deep cleansing.

(Do) Drink water. Balance alcohol,  sweet foods, or salty foods with increased intake of water. For every glass of alcohol, drink a glass of water. The same goes for greasy, high-sodium, or sugary foods. Your skin reflects what you eat and drink. A diet rich in vitamins is key to treating the skin from the inside out; read this blog for more information about vitamins and the skin. Items rich in vitamins and antioxidants include green tea, berries, colorful vegetables, leafy greens, and nuts.

(Do) Decrease stress by exercising daily. Stress can definitely affect the look of the skin. Exercise can decrease stress hormones like cortisol and help increase healthy blood flow. Talk to your physician about how to integrate exercise safety into your routine.

(Do) Apply your serum with a microroller. The use of a CIT® roller can assist with deeper penetration of targeted serums and creams into the top layers of the dermis, increasing the benefit to the look of youthful, beautiful skin. By creating micro-wounds, the penetration stimulates the skin’s natural repair mechanisms and collagen production.

Easy to travel with and use at home, a skincare tool like a micro roller could be a great jump-start to your fall skincare routine. Ask about our Microneedling service, with the use of longer needles, approved only for in-office use by professionals.

Serums are an easy and effective way to super-boost the vitamins, peptides, and antioxidants for the skin’s benefit. We typically recommend mixing one pump of your serum with your preferred moisturizer every night for full effect.

Do Not…

(Don’t) Ignore moisturizing every morning and evening. As we age, it’s normal and natural for the skin to lose a component called Hyaluronic Acid as well as overall fat in certain areas of the face. This aggravates the appearance of photodamage, i.e. coloration differences and “uneven” looking skin tone. The skin appears dull and lacking that “glow” we love in the summertime.

Utilizing skin care products with hyaluronic acid can help re-boot the skin back into a state of well-being. Antioxidant protection and other ingredients work together with hyaluronic acid to promote youthful-looking skin, no matter what season.
A cult favorite for a reason, try out Environ’s step-up moisturizers. Ask your local skincare expert to help you decide which step-up system is right for you– SkinEssentiA or YouthEssentiA.

(Don’t) Leave makeup on overnight. Use of a pre-cleanse oil and toner is an easy, quick way to cleanse the face, even on the latest nights. Your skin will thank you, come morning.

Dual Action Pre-Cleansing Oil –This silky oil pre-cleansing oil will shock you at how 1) effect it is at removing all eye/face makeup and 2) leaving the skin feeling smooth and hydrated *not oily*
Botanical Infused Moisturizing Toner – Not the basic toner or alcohol-filled toner of decades past, this luxurious feeling, super-hydrating toner is the perfect way to wipe the skin clean as well as prep it for your night serum/moisturizer combo.

(Don’t) Continue to use products that aren’t working. If you have tried a product and do not feel you are seeing benefits or enjoy using it, toss it. Life is too short to use things you don’t like or need.

(Don’t) Sleep on dirty sheets. If you aren’t already, make sure you’re washing your sheets, especially pillowcases 1-2x a week.

(Don’t) Touch your face excessively. The oils on our hands can contribute to clogged pores and the introduction of bacteria and pollutants. Many of us are guilty of touching our hair and face all too often. Pay attention to how much you do so today; increased awareness of this habit is the first step to change.

(Don’t) Neglect your sleep. Adults should get 8-10 hours of sleep a night whereas teenagers need at least 9-11 hours per night. Sleep can affect the appearance of dark under-eye circles as well as overall vibrancy.

(Don’t) Fall for trendy skin care remedies like sheet masks or an at-home peel. Often these direct-to-consumer products are futile in aiding actual skin conditions. Talking with a skin care professional about evidence-based products and services is the best way to start tackling serious skin conditions like melasma, problematic skin adult acne, or aging. It is important to receive an individualized skin care plan, though the likely recommended course of care will include both professional services and a custom at-home plan.

Environ products are different and stand out for a reason. Environ products use the most researched ingredients when it comes to skincare. The products aren’t focused on the latest trendy ingredients or seasonal forumulas. Dating back to the original products in the 1990s, Environ’s product philosophy continues to revolve around sun safety (with key sunscreen products) as well as age-management lines full of essential Vitamins A, C, and E as well as peptides, antioxidants, and growth factors, all well-known to maintain the look of gorgeous, glowing skin.
