Pollution & The Skin
Since the 70s, Earth Day has been celebrated every April as a way to learn and get inspired about how to better take care of our home, planet Earth. This year, celebrating Earth Day feels more important than ever, as climate events seem to be increasing, and businesses’ impact seems to be making only marginal impacts on the rate of CO2 production. But there is hope. More and more businesses are making pledges to shareholders and stakeholders alike to act greener, with environmental-friendly practices, using reusable or recyclable packaging, sourcing locally, and more.
Environ Skin Care is one such company, constantly questing the impact of its footprint on the environment. Elements like packaging, marketing, and distribution are all streamlined to be as green and efficient as possible.
Taking Care of the Body
For one’s own bodily care, protection against the elements goes hand in hand with climate change. Using sunscreen, wearing weather-appropriate clothing, staying hydrated, and yes– using pollution-fighting skin care products to remove grime at the end of the day are all effective ways to stay inspired and contribute to your overall wellness.
Pollutants & the Skin
As much as pollutants can be harmful to the Earth and the body’s lungs– these particles also get absorbed into the dermis as micro-particles. These molecules can contribute to the production of rogue agents known as free radicals which can cause a variety of visible issues like skin laxity (looseness), hyperpigmentation, fine lines, inflammation, acne, rosacea, and more. Overall, pollution can really contribute to clogged pores. The skin is vulnerable.
Pollutants can include sunlight, smoke, car emissions, gas fumes, chemical cleaners, and more.
Habits & Stress Reduction
Small, daily habits are the way to big, long-term changes, and consistency is key.
At the start of each day, and at the end of every night, follow a simple but effective skincare routine. That way, you are protecting your skin during the day, and removing harmful pollutant particles from the skin’s surface at night.
24/7 mask-wearing is not what we’re recommending and wouldn’t be effective anyway, since pollution molecules are so tiny.
At home, follow these 4 simple steps:
- Cleanse
- Tone
- Moisturize
- Protect
1–CLEANSE
Have you heard of pre-cleansing? Environ’s Pre-Cleanse Oil is a wonderful start to your nighttime routine. As oil will attract oil and remove all the pollutants from the skin, this pre-cleanser is essential for a deep cleanse that doesn’t strip away the skin’s natural barrier.
Next, follow with one of Enviorn’s gentle cleansers, effective at removing trace dirt and debris. Environ cleansers are sophisticated formulas, containing hydrating and soothing elements not found in over-the-counter stores.
2–TONE
To tone or not to tone? A great toner should work in synergy with the other products. Similar to cleansers, a toner should not strip your skin’s moisture away but rather contribute to hydrating and rejuvenating the look of the skin. AVST Hydrating Toner, SebuTone, or C-Quence Toners, are all designed to carefully tend to hydrate and prep the skin for the moisturizing stage.
After toning, use your CIT roller if you have one. Read this for more information about microrolling.*
3–MOISTURIZE
Use your favorite Environ eye serum like the antioxidant-packed Antioxidant & Peptide Eye Gel with your ring finger, gently dabbing the orbital bone area. Typically speaking, serums and eye products tend to be a lighter consistency, absorbing quicker, designed that way because the skin in these areas is thinner.
As a rule of thumb, apply products from lightest to heaviest.
Environ’s Vitamin A-rich moisturizers are the heroes of your routines. Nourish your skin with essential Vitamins A, C, and E, peptides, antioxidants, and growth factors. These are crucial components to maintaining the look of youthful, unaffected skin over a lifetime. Mix in your concentrated Retinol Serum 1, 2, or 3, for an extra boost of Vitamin A. (Ask your skincare expert about which level is right for you.)
Antioxidants are key to fighting free radicals in the body. (Remember how we mentioned pollution can increase these in our skin cells?) Environ has a few antioxidant-packed products you can add during the “moisturize” stage of your routine:
- Antioxidant Defence Cream
- Antioxidant & Peptide Eye Gel
- Vita-Antioxidant Hydrating Oil Capsules
- Vita-Enriched Antioxidant Gel
4–PROTECT
PM Routine | Moisturizing booster products such as Super Moisturizer + or Hydrating Oil Capsules are beautiful nighttime routine additions to your skincare routine.
AM Routine| During the day, also finish your skincare routine with an application of sunscreen. Wear sun-protective clothing, and eyeglasses, and stay hydrated when outside in the sun. Take care of yourself, and you take care of those around you even better.
A healthy, moisturized skincare layer will help repel harmful pollutants more effectively than dry, extra oily, or otherwise compromised skin.
Once a week, consider a deeply cleansing and luxurious mask like the Clay Masque which is hydrating, gently exfoliating, and is a major “detoxifying” agent for clogged skin. Read this blog for more information about various masks.*
The effects of a new skincare routine typically take at least 2-3 months.
Once a month or so, book yourself a professional skin care treatment like a Cool Peel or a Signature Facial. These services truly go deep and will help to reduce both internal stress and external stress from the environment.
